I met Bryan Mason as my dad bought a house in Tourrettes sur Loup, a medieval village in the hills behind Antibes in the south of France.
Bryan was a gardener there and he was introduced to my family by Clare Hollingworth, the first journalist to report the outbreak of World War II, the “scoop of the century.” Bryan lived in Clare’s shack, a cabin on the hill above the village.
True creativity is when you think outside the box. Bryan had no box. His mind was free of era, culture, religion, parents, age, name and even time. Bryan painted in this space. Free from ego.
Bryan did not think that it was important to talk about himself. From the little I was able to find out, I learnt that he was a twin, came from a large family that lived on a farm in Yorkshire and that he had been in the army. Bryan had also been to Sweden, Malaysia, Japan, and Hong Kong where he met Zhao Shao Ang, who inspired him to paint.
And so, poorly educated, Bryan taught himself to a level where he was able to enter the Slade School of Fine Art, and after graduating, became a tutor at Goldsmiths, part of the University of London. During this time, Bryan became friends with David Bohm, the quantum physicist, and taught Bohm’s wife painting. Bohm also introduced Bryan to Jiddu Krishnamurti, the Indian philosopher. Perhaps from Jiddu, Bryan realised that art cannot be ‘taught’, so quit teaching, and left for France. Money was earned by gardening, and he lived like this until his death in 2014.

私がブライアンに出会ったのは、父が南フランスのアンティーブから山奥に入った中世の美しい村、トゥレット＝シュル＝ルーに別荘を買った時になる。
ブライアンは、村に住む庭師として、「世紀のスクープ」と称された第二次世界大戦の勃発を報じた戦争特派員のクレア・ホリングワース（Clare Hollingworth）から私たち家族に紹介された。ブライアンは、村の丘の上のクレアが所有する小屋に住んでいた。
私は香港に生まれ、ロンドンの寄宿学校で学び、トゥレット村で夏を過ごした。
このような恵まれた環境で、物理的な世界にどっぷり浸かっていた私を「目覚めさせて」くれたのがブライアンだった。
本当のクリエイティビティ、創造の力は、「箱」の外で発揮されるものだと思う。ブライアンは「箱」を持たない男だった。彼は時代、文化、信仰、両親（の価値観）、年齢、名前、そして時間からも全ての物事から解放されていた。ブライアンは何物にも捕らわれない自由な領域で絵を描いていた。エゴ（自我）からも解放された場所で。
ブライアンは自分自身のことを語ることは重要ではないと思っていたようだ。彼について多くを知ることはできなかったが、数少ない情報では、彼は双子の一人であって、ヨークシャー州の農家の大家族の中で育ち、一時期は英国軍の仕事をしていたことだ。ブライアンは世界各国を周り、スウェーデン、マレーシア、日本、香港などを来訪した。そして、後に絵画の師として仰ぐ趙(ちょう)少昂(しょうこう)（Zhao Shao Ang）とは香港で出会っている。
ブライアンは独学で英国屈指のスレード美術学校に入学することができた。卒業後は、ロンドン大学ゴールドスミス校にて講師となる。ゴールドスミス校で教鞭をとっていた時に、量子物理学者のデヴィッド・ボームと出会い、ブライアンは彼の妻に絵を教えた。ボームはまた、ブライアンにインド出身の哲学者、ジッドゥ・クリシュナムルティを紹介し、おそらく彼との出会いからブライアンは芸術とは「教わる」ものではないことに気付き、教職を捨ててトゥレット村に移り住んだのである。以後、庭師として生計を立てながら、2014年のその生涯が終わるまで、ブライアンは村で絵を描き続けた。
